MMA Training in Thailand and Hong Kong 2012!!

Earlier in the year between April and May, a few of us from Yoseikan Budo UK went out to train in Phuket, Thailand and this is what went down...

After signing up to train at Phuket Top Team, 2 months of hard training began...

Ian, Alex and Glen trained over the 2 months in the styles of Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing and MMA at Phuket Top Team and had an amazing time cross training and hope to go back again some time in the future! Phuket Top Team were very welcoming to everyone regardless of style, gender and race, with a vast array of different levels  of people training there all at the same time from amateurs to professional MMA and Muay Thai fighters including Roger Huerta (ex-UFC, ONE FC), Andrew Leone (ONE FC & Road FC), Rodrigo Praxedes (ONE FC & current URCC middleweight champion), Adam Kayoom (ONE FC), JJ Ambrose (Bellator), Brad Terrey (URCC), Ray Elbe (Martial Combat) and many more...

Above (L to R): Olavo Abreu (3rd Dan BJJ), Glenn Williamson, Suyan Queiroz (4th Dan BJJ), Ian Johnson, Alex Anthony, Ray Elbe (1st Dan BJJ and MMA fighter) and Rodrigo Praxedes (1st Dan BJJ and MMA fighter) after visiting professor Suyan's awesome BJJ Gi and No Gi Seminar.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi classes were run 3 times a week in the daytime and No Gi classes were run 5 times a week in the evening by two of the best personalities in the gym, 3rd Dan BJJ Carlson Gracie Jnr Black Belt, Olavo Abreu and 1st Dan BJJ Robson Moura Black Belt, Rodrigo Praxedes. Being able to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from 2 high level, highly decorated Brazilian Professors in Thailand was an amazing and rare opportunity and we can't thank them enough! However, Rodrigo's voice shouting 'Running, Running, Running...' still haunts us all! lol

Muay Thai classes were run 6 days a week, twice a day, with some really high level Thai instructors (Kru's), who all show a real passion for passing on all of their knowledge of the '8 limbs' including Kru Bert, Kru Lucky, Kru Choek, Kru Daeng, Kru Lek, Kru Saeng , Kru Goi and Kru Sa. Sessions were really hard work but fun and their was a real 'team' mentality especially at the end of the sessions. Since returning to the UK, PTT have had many other famous Muay Thai fighters coaching there including ex Lumpini and WMC Muay Thai champions at multiple weights Nonsai Sor Sanyakorn and Samkor Kiatmontep.

Wrestling sessions were coached twice a week by an American Andrew Leone, 2 x New York State Champion, and current MMA fighter in Road FC and ONE FC. Andrew was a really friendly, down to earth great coach and really helped to improve on our grappling!

As well as the above, we also tried out the boxing with Barry Robinson, MMA and strength and conditioning sessions, however we definately needed more time to fit everything in!

Thanks to the owner, Boyd Clarke, Albus on the desk, Olavo, Rodrigo, Andrew,  all of the Thai coaches, Barry, and everyone else at PTT who made us feel welcome and taught us loads of new skills!

In between training, it was great to enjoy everything Phuket has to offer including great Thai food, amazing beaches at Kata, Kata Noi, Nai Harn and Karon beach where we went swimming and tried surfing, 3D cinemas, bowling, retail outlets, nightlife, the hotel swimming pool and jacuzzi for recovery! and most importantly, the Songkran water festival which is in April and is just one big water fight all over Thailand for one of its national holidays!

We also managed to train a few sessions of Traditional Muay Thai known as Muay Boran and Krabi Krabong at Tiger Muay Thai and MMA under Kru Oh.

And some Muay Thai with one of K-1 legend Badr Hari's former trainers seen below,

A pretty EPIC trip was rounded off, with a visit to EPIC MMA in Hong Kong in June to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Professor's Silvio Braga (3rd Dan BJJ on right in black gi) and Marcus 'Kiko' Cacella (3rd Dan BJJ on left in white gi) on the recommendation of Olavo Abreu. The facilities at EPIC were incredible, whilst getting some amazing training in inside one of the biggest skyscrapers on the main island of Hong Kong!

With thanks to Phuket Top Team and Epic MMA for all the great training and hospitality, for more information on both clubs, please visit the links below or click the links within the article.

Recommended Training Equipment

We will be placing an order for pairs of Fumetsu knee pads using our trade account with Bytomic at the end of next week. The price varies depending on how many pairs we order as we can save on delivery costs when buying multiple pairs at the same time. For at least five pairs of knee pads, the price per pair is £19. Please contact Ian next week on Tuesday or Thursday with the size required (S, M, L, XL) and payment of £19 per pair.

After trialling various knee pads at the club (rogue viper, venum, fumetsu), we believe that the Fumetsu knee pads are the best we've used so far, and since then most of the club have bought a pair. They don't move much during use, are very flexible, and well made with plenty of padding around the knee and are widely available at a low price.

After a few of us at the club have finished trying out some different MMA training gloves, we decided that the Punchtown Karpal TRX (8oz) appears to be the best we've tried so far. We recommend them especially for sparring, as they have very good thumb and wrist protection, plenty of padding for sparring (8oz) as opposed to standard MMA competition gloves (4oz).

We now have a trade account open with a leading retailer in order to purchase the TRX MMA gloves at trade price. Normally they retail at £39.99 plus P&P. Please speak to Izzel for more information.

To protect your jaw and teeth during sparring, we can recommend purchasing the following gumshield:

Shockdoctor V3 Adults Gumshield (Around £20 - £30):

A more expensive better quality gumshield can be obtained from Opro who offer custom fit gumshields (Between £35 - £90):
